WHAT kind of werewolf?

Today's guest is author Karenna Colcroft, sharing her new release and a werewolf protagonist who doesn't follow the usual profile!

A What Kind of Werewolf?

I’d like to thank Clare for inviting me to her blog, and wish a Happy Birthday month!

This is incredibly good timing for me because my newest M/M romance novel, Veggie Burgers to Go, will be released this Friday, January 6, from MLR Press. It’s the second book in a series called Real Werewolves Don’t Eat Meat.

“Wait!” voices say from the other side of the computer. “All wolves eat meat, don’t they? Especially werewolves?”

Not in my universe. That’s the cool thing about being an author; I get to make the rules.

In the first book in the series, Salad on the Side, readers meet Kyle Slidell, a vegan who has recently relocated to Boston and developed a city-sized crush on his neighbor, Tobias Rogan.

What Kyle doesn’t know is that Tobias and most of their other neighbors are werewolves, part of a pack called the Boston North Pack. Kyle finds that out in a most unfortunate way: one of the female pack members, jealous of the attention Tobias is giving Kyle, attacks Kyle in the garden shared by their apartment buildings—and turns him into a werewolf.

Kyle’s pretty stubborn. Even in wolf form, he refuses to eat meat. Even though he knows that he needs protein, iron, etc. to cope with the fact that his body will now shift into wolf form at least once a month.

In Veggie Burgers to Go, Kyle and Tobias’s story continues. The first book ends on a happy, or at least hopeful, note, but everything isn’t happily-ever-after yet. If any Alpha actually falls in love with their mate, it’s considered a sign of weakness. If that mate happens to be another male, meaning that the Alpha is gay, it’s even more proof of weakness as far as some jerks are concerned. And some of those jerks will go to any lengths to remove Tobias as Alpha of the Boston North Pack. Any lengths at all.

Kyle Slidell has become my absolute favorite character to write. In addition to the two novels, a story about Kyle and Tobias’s first Christmas together was released by MLR Press on December 26, and I’m looking forward to continuing their story in book three in the series, Hummus on Rye. Writing on that one will begin in February.

From Clare: Like to stretch your writing fingers after Christmas' excesses? Fancy writing something for the visitors this month? It can be anything from a flashfic 3 sentences to a drabble of 100 or so, or even more. Any genre, any theme, any rating, any character(s). Maybe ones you already love, maybe the chance to try on a new character for size.
I'm holding a FREE FICTION DAY on the 28th, so send me new fiction - links to your existing work also welcome! - to clarelondon11 AT yahoo.co.uk and I'll post it all then :).

That sounds like a fun concept. While as I rule I like my werewolves pretty traditional, it can be fun when a trope is turned on it's head like that. I'll have to check it out as I do love me some shifter boys. :-) Congrats on the new release.

Thanks for letting me celebrate your birthday with you, Clare!

cdn_tam, thanks :) Writing a vegan werewolf was even more fun than I thought it would be. And just to turn things a bit more inside-out, Tobias, the Alpha werewolf, turns out to be pretty submissive in bed... Kyle and Tobias are two of my favorite characters, and I hope readers like them as well.

A vegan werewolf is a neat idea and poles apart from my shifters who tend to resent eating anything green (unless it's an Easter bunny).

Congrats on the new release.

Oh I love wolf shifter stories as my 100% favorite forever. I just love that raw predator qualities of alpha males...*S* I have the series on my gotta have list, and can't wait to read them.
I am very picky meat eater myself, and veggies are my most favorite above that...LOL
Great post!
Thank you!

Oh, I like the idea of a vegetarian werewolf! I can see it as a metaphor for struggling against being a werewolf in general too--very cool. Now I want to know more!
